Where is the tov?

“What ever happened to the values of humanity
Whatever happened to the fairness and equality
Instead of spreading love, we’re spreading animosity
Lack of understanding, leading us away from unity
That’s the reason why sometimes I’m feeling under
That’s the reason why sometimes I’m feeling down
It’s no wonder why sometimes I’m feeling under
I gotta keep my faith alive, until love is found.”

The Black Eyed Peas, 2003

This is what the LORD says:
“Cursed is the one who trusts in man, who depends on flesh for his strength, and whose heart turns away from the LORD. He will be like a bush in the wastelands; he
will not see prosperity when it comes. He will dwell in the parched places of the desert, in a salt land where no one lives. “But blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in him. He will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.”

Jeremiah 17:5-8, roughly 587 B.C.

Tov is the Hebrew word for good...but it’s not good like we use the word today. It means so much more than merely pleasant or passable. It is a rich word that describes prosperity, delight, moral goodness...and so much more.

So, I heard Pastor Larry’s sermon twice when I was running the computer. And the whole time, “Where is the love” kept running through my head. Both the prophet of God and the modern-day poets recognize there is something missing. When we turn to human interests, we are not getting to what’s really good. God really is the source of our blessings...not people.

And then we will be like trees planted by the water (Referencing Psalm 1? Even if Jeremiah isn’t directly...his readers will think of it). Firm...secure...grounded...bearing fruit in times of drought. Sounds good to me.
